The hole in Nagore Road – which became the subject matter for
Lithuanian artist Ernest Zacharevic’s “framed artwork” – has been
covered up, but the frame is staying in place.
Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, in a press conference yesterday,
said a cover had been placed over the hole to prevent accidents while
the frame had been left untouched.
The artwork is embedded on the road where a fire hydrant once stood.
When the hydrant was removed about 10 years ago, it left a depression in the road.
Lim said the square hole did not come under MPPP’s jurisdiction but under Indah Water Konsortium.
In a news report yesterday, Lim had said the state government viewed
the work in a positive light and would not demolish or whitewash any
artwork even if the work was satirical and poured scorn on the state
government.
